RFK, Jr., for POTUS?

3rd-party presidential runs, even moderately subscribed to, accomplish nothing but to serve as spoilers for the candidate that is philosophically nearest the rogue candidate.

The only 3rd-party run in my lifetime, that had any significance, was waged by Ross Perot, in 1992. From everything I was able to deduce, at the time, he swayed a narrow victory away from Bush41 and gave us Bill Clinton, who had nowhere near a mandate.

RFK, Jr., while claiming to be a Democrat, probably poses more of a threat to pull Independent and moderate Democrat voters away from Trump than Biden, thus giving us another Biden presidency, or whomever the Dems shoehorn in when he finally drops over.

To be clear, no matter how much you like RFK, Jr., and the things he saying, he has no chance of winning an election. No 3rd-party candidate ever has and neither will he.

If you prefer any Democrat over Trump, then RFK, Jr., might be your man to make a statement that, while you detest the status quo, you do not want another Trump presidency.

OTOH, if you like RFK, Jr., but would prefer Trump over a Democrat, an RFK vote is a spoiler. It will not elect RFK, Jr., and it will throw the election to the Democrat candidate. That would give us 4 more years of Biden, Kamala Harris, or, the most likely replacement, Gavin Newsome. If you think things are crazy now, take a look at California.

Finally, addressing the rationale of 3rd-party organizations… Historically, Libertarians have been the loudest with regard to arguing that 3rd-party votes are not wasted and, in fact, are effectual. That said, I’d like to pose the challenge for anyone, especially Libertarians, to provide proof that any 3rd-party vote made any impact on any election or candidate in our lifetime, with exception of the Perot candidacy that performed as a spoiler, thus making my point. Furthermore, any successful 3rd-party establishment will ultimately require a network of organizations at the local level, as is seen in both the Republican and Democrat parties.

Okay, your turn… Change My Mind!

  1. The other notable 3rd party candidate was Theodore Roosevelt who lost the 1912 Republican bid to Taft and formed the New Progressive party (Bull Moose Party) and split the ote giving Woodrow Wilson the Presidency.

Do you really thing RFK Jr would take more potential Trump voters than the Democrat candidate’s votes? He is Prochoice for one and holds many other Democrat views. I know he’s not like by the party elites, but he is a Kennedy after all.

    Good blog, food for thought.

      1. I’m no longer a Trump fan and initially thought RFK Jr looked good. That is until I read about what he stands for. You may be right in that point, too many of us don’t actually research the candidate before voting for them.

  2. I still see Trump as the best option to get America back on track. There are a number of individuals I’d like to see become advisors/Cabinet… Vivek Ramaswamy, Doug Burgum, and, maybe, RFK, Jr.
